Erica Eckert Selected to Speak at ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½â€™s Jerry M. Lewis May 4 Lecture Series
The lecture series created in 2022 to honor the legacy of ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ Professor Emeritus of Sociology Jerry M. Lewis, Ph.D., will feature ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ Assistant Professor of Higher Education Administration Erica Eckert, Ph.D., as this year’s selected speaker.

Advancing the legacy of May 4, 1970, a tragic day when the Ohio National Guard fired on ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ students during an anti-war protest on campus, killing four students, wounding nine students and forever changing the lives of countless others, the university will hold its annual commemoration on May 3-4.

ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ has scheduled a variety of programs, events and exhibits for this year’s remembrance of May 4, 1970, to honor the four students who were killed, the nine students who were wounded and the countless others whose lives were forever changed when the Ohio National Guard fired on ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ students during an anti-war protest.
‘Armed With Our Voices’ May 4 Poetry Exhibit Opens at ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ Student Center
A new interactive exhibit from the Wick Poetry Center that encouraged visitors to explore the history of student protest through the ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ shootings, has opened in the Kent Student Center as part of May 4 commemoration activities.
ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½â€™s May 4 Events to Include In-Person Dedication of Wounded Student Markers
This year’s return of in-person events to commemorate the ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ shootings will include the dedication of bronze markers placed on the spots where nine students were wounded on May 4, 1970. Markers designating the locations of each of the four students killed were installed in 1999. Since that time, a small group had been working to have similar markers placed for the wounded students.

For the first time since 2019, ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ will remember May 4, 1970, with its return to an in-person, annual commemoration to honor the four students who were killed, the nine students who were wounded and the countless others whose lives were forever changed when the Ohio National Guard fired on ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ students during an anti-war protest.
ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ School of Music to Commemorate May 4 Through Music, Dance and Poetry at Severance
The ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ School of Music returns to Severance Music Center on Monday, May 2, at 7 p.m. featuring nearly 300 students from across the university performing a rich lineup of genres and styles from classical and jazz to gospel and world music. It will also feature collaborations with the School of Theatre and Dance and the Wick Poetry Center.

Virtual Events Promote Peace, Anti-Racism as ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ Marks the Annual Commemoration of May 4, 1970
To honor and remember the events that occurred on May 4, 1970, virtual events and exhibits hosted by ÇàÄêɬµ¼º½ students, faculty and staff are scheduled from April 30 through May 4. The virtual events include several powerful speakers and events that promote peace and anti-racism and educate future students about the legacy of May 4, 1970.
